my old man would always say that he wasn’t good with speeches
and now you witness here that it’s been passed on me
 
and on occasions like this when we raise our glass to him
so shyly he’d rise up and speak
 
     he’d say surely now you all have better things to do
     than to stick around and toast the likes of me
     just one more thing to add
     well you know you’ve all gone mad
     I’m so overwhelmed and humbled standing here
   
so here’s to my old man who wasn’t good with speeches
they were always delivered in his soft and awkward way
 
you could see a tear but it wouldn’t fall
unlike mine here as I face you one and all
 
      and say surely now you all have better things to do
      than to stick around and toast the likes of me
      true wealth in the end
      is your family and friends
      and I’m overwhelmed and humbled standing here
 
        so what else can I add
        but I’ll say just like my Dad
